Over 55 city councils, school boards, and county boards of supervisors have all moved to denounce SB 1070 by passing divestment resolutions, boycott resolutions, and resolutions condemning the law. They have called for comprehensive immigration reform and travel bans.
National Resolutions
- January 7, 2011—The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) announced that it would not hold any meetings in its headquarter state of Kentucky if the state legislature passed an Arizona copycat bill there.
- November 12, 2010—The Utah Compact, a statement of support for comprehensive immigration reform, was signed and announced by a coalition of business, community, and religious leaders in Utah.
- July 9, 2010—The National League of Cities’ board of directors voiced its opposition to Arizona’s immigration law and renewed its call for Congress and the administration to act immediately to enact comprehensive immigration reform.
- June 20—23, 2010—The National Congress of American Indians adopted a resolution opposing SB 1070 as discriminatory legislation at its 2010 Mid-Year Session held in Rapid City, South Dakota.
- June 14, 2010—The U.S. Conference of Mayors approved two resolutions condemning Arizona’s new immigration law and asking Congress to overhaul federal immigration policies.
- June 8, 2010—The Navajo Nation Council, the country’s largest American Indian reservation, passed a resolution in opposition to the Arizona law.
State and Local Resolutions
- July 6, 2010—Ann Arbor, MI City Council passed a resolution opposing the Arizona law.
- June 11, 2010—Amherst, MA City Council voted to ban business with Arizona.
- June 9, 2010—Bloomington, IN City Council passed a boycott resolution, which includes not sending city members to meetings in Arizona and refusing to enter into contracts with companies that are Arizona-based.
- June 7, 2010—Seventeen Arizona ethnic media outlets published the first-ever joint editorial condemning SB 1070 and calling for federal action.
- June 1, 2010—Cook County, IL Board of Commissioners passed a resolution calling for a boycott and divestment from Arizona.
- May 27, 2010—Kansas City, MO City Council passed a resolution calling for the repeal of SB 1070.
- May 25, 2010—Tacoma, WA City Council passed a resolution condemning the Arizona law.
- May 24, 2010—Baltimore, MD City Council passed a resolution opposing SB 1070.
- Chicago City Council passed a boycott resolution.
- May 20, 2010— New Haven, CT Board of Aldermen passed a resolution condemning the Arizona law.
- May 19, 2010—The Tohono O’odham Legislative Council (Arizona) passed a resolution opposing SB 1070 and calling for lawful measures to repeal or invalidate it.
- May 18, 2010—Berkeley, CA City Council passed a boycott resolution.
- May 17, 2010—Cleveland, OH City Council passed a resolution opposing SB 1070 and calling on the federal government to pass comprehensive immigration reform.
- May 17, 2010—Seattle, WA City Council approved a resolution calling for comprehensive immigration reform, denouncing the Arizona law, and urging the Seattle city government to refrain from sending employees to Arizona.
- May 13, 2010—Austin, TX City Council passed a resolution to cease business ties with and travel to Arizona.
- May 6, 2010—Philadelphia, PA City Council passed a resolution opposing the copycat legislation that was introduced in Pennsylvania’s legislature.
- May 5, 2010—West Hollywood, CA City Council passed a resolution denouncing SB 1070.
- May 4, 2010—Boston, MA City Council passed divestment and boycott resolutions.
- May 4, 2010—The New York State Senate passed a resolution denouncing SB 1070 and calling for comprehensive immigration reform.
- May 4, 2010—Oakland, CA City Council passed a boycott resolution.
- May 4, 2010—Tucson, AZ City Council passed a resolution to sue the state of Arizona, making Tucson the first Arizona city to file a lawsuit.
- May 3, 2010—San Diego, CA City Council passed a resolution opposing SB 1070.
- May 3, 2010—Santa Ana, CA City Council passed a resolution condemning SB 1070 and calling for comprehensive immigration reform.
- April 29, 2010—New York City Council passed a resolution calling for comprehensive immigration reform.
- Denver, Colorado City Council passed a proclamation calling for comprehensive immigration reform.
- Los Angeles, California City Council passed a divestment resolution that could cost Arizona close to $56 million.
Travel Bans
- May 19, 2010—Columbus, OH Mayor Michael Coleman banned city workers from traveling to Arizona on government business and will review contracts with businesses based there on a case-by-case basis.
- May 13, 2010—Austin, TX City Council passed a resolution to cease business travel to Arizona.
- May 4, 2010—Boulder, CO City Manager ordered a boycott and travel ban for city employees and businesses per the city council’s request asking for the Human Relations Commission to carry out strong action in response to SB 1070.
- April 30, 2010—Minneapolis, MN - Mayor R. T. Ryback urged city employees to cease travel to Arizona.
- April 29, 2010—Denver, CO public schools banned employees from taking official trips to Arizona.
- April 28, 2010—St. Paul, MN Mayor Chris Coleman ordered a ban on official city travel to Arizona. State officials are also considering a ban on Arizona travel.
